Self Adhering Tape: A post that I ran across recently suggested that the tape that is used to hold the cotton ball on your arm after you give blood might be a good tape to carry in your camera bag. I agree and will order some here. Suggested uses are to hold camera straps out of the way when on a tripod...to hold flowers still while shooting close...to mark flash units right and left. I'm sure that my first use won't be any of these but I know the tape will be useful.
Selections: After you learn how to optimize an image you will want to know how to affect just portions of an image. To optimize/modify just a portion of an image you will need to select it. I do teach how to make selections in class, however to learn more about making selections I recommend that you read this article.
Now here is an interesting post. Chase Jarvis, a commercial photographer, posts a series of 2000 still images on YouTube. Take a few minutes and watch this if you want to see how a professional sees/works.
Extending Dynamic Range can radically improve some images. Both film and digital cameras are able to capture about 5 stops of dynamic range...much less than the human eye. This post discusses blending two images into one to extend the dynamic range so that the human eye finds the image more realistic and appealing.
